Underwing pattern of Shy Albatross distinguishes it from all "dark-backed" albatrosses, except Salvin's and Chatham albatrosses. It is mostly white with a narrow black border and a diagnostic black spot on the leading edge near the body. Adult's bill is olive grey with a yellow tip. Wingspan is 2.5 m (3.4 m in great albatrosses).
